The Spalding 88461G provides an excellent, economical solution for your basketball court when you really want a larger backboard but do not have the money to pay for it. The massive 60 inch glass backboard gives you that large playing area, just barely shorter than a regulation sized backboard (72 inches wide). This unit also comes with a 4x4 inch, 2 piece square pole and free ground sleeve. The square shape and size of the pole help to reduce system movement when the product is in use. You can also raise and lower this sytem from 7.5 ft to 10 ft. using Spalding U-Turn lift mechanism.

Solid product but difficult to adjust height

The hoop I had before was a solid quality ($500) portable basketball hoop. But it was not particularly stable/steady, so my kids wanted an in-ground system. This is a very good hoop for the money. Note that installation of any in-ground hoop is a major pain. If you have the option of paying someone to install it, do not hesitate to do so. Remember that you will have to dig a substantial hole adjacent to your driveway. You will be digging through all the rocks put down as back fill around the driveway. You will use somewhere between 8-10 eighty pound bags of cement during installation.
The plastic sheath was supposed to make installation easier with the trade off that the pole may wobble somewhat. However, I ran into problems with the pole not fitting back down the sheath when it came time to replace the pole, which now weighed nearly 200 pounds after filling it with cement! I had to cut away some of the plastic lining. Now the hole was too big and the pole wobbled. I fixed it by filling the gaps between the pole and plastic with metal washers. Then I caulked the gap to prevent water from getting in there and rusting the washers. It worked well. Overall very happy, but installation was a 3-4 day project in stages. Also note, the height adjuster is definitely more difficult than some others that can be done with one hand. This one requires placing a metal pole onto the height adjustment hook and spinning it. My tall 13 year old can do it, but not my rather short 11 year old cannot. Also if you lower the hoop to the bottom and keep cranking it to lower it further, it will shear off the bolt that holds the crank mechanism. My kids did this twice. Not a big deal to replace, but a nuissance. (Updated on 3/22/2012.)

This is a GREAT product at an excellent price. I was not able to find a 60" glass backboard for a lower price, and that its Spalding is a bonus. The nice NBA logo on the backboard looks awesome and the materials included with the basketball hoop are SOLID. Love it! I installed this with the help of only 1 other person, and found the directions spot-on. If you follow the installation manual to the letter, you will not have a problem. It will take you 3 days though to allow the concrete to cure. I would definitely recommend this product and company to my friends.
