Kodiak Canvas tents have a very similar design to Springbar tents but Kodiak Canvas tents were not made to be a cheap imitation of a Springbar tent rather an improved evolution. Kodiak Canvas tents are made with top of the line materials and components including YKK zippers. In a head to head comparison you will get comparable canvas, and frame. However Kodiak Canvas gives you features you do not get in Springbar, such as Double Doors, Vents, Strap-and-Cinch Storage Bag, 16 oz vinyl floor (Springbar has 9 oz), heavy duty 12 inch steel rod stakes, etc& You get a great value at an affordable price with Kodiak Canvas camping tents.

*Its not a bad idea to go over the seams and stake loops with a waterproofing called Kiwi Camp dry. (Use the silicone based.)

Canvas Camping Tent Packaging Includes:
  • Tent Poles
  • Tent Stakes
  • Framing, etc.
  • Weight break down: total tent weight - 70 lbs., tent material alone - about 35 lbs., poles and stakes - about 35 lbs.
  • Manual Included in packaging and will contain list of additional parts and features

The floor of the tent is a made of a super-duty 16 oz vinyl that is reinforced by laminating it with a polyester mesh. It is similar to what is used in some above ground swimming pools. It is completely waterproof. There is a seam in the floor where two sections vinyl are sewn together. Because of the needle holes a small amount of water could enter at the seam. If needed you can seal this seam with a vinyl glue, or seam tape readily available at outdoor stores.

How do Kodiak Canvas Tents compare with cheaper competitor canvas tents?

The first thing is that Kodiak Canvas is the Cadillac of canvas tents so you may invest a little more for a lot more quality.

One thing to compare is the tent weight. Some competitor 12x9 tents weigh about 69 lbs. This Kodiak Canvas tent weighs 87 lbs. That is 20% more tent for your money.

Other canvas tents are 8 oz. Kodiak Canvas is 8.5 and 10 oz on the roof. Canvas is tricky because there are a lot of factors other than just weight. Kodiak Canvas has a silicone treatment that is breathable and very durable (i.e. it will be waterproof for years and years of use) and will not wick (draw moisture from the outside when you rub against it on the inside).

Other canvas tents have the same center height 7.5 ft (90 inch ) but the side walls on the Kodiak Canvas tent are 5.5 ft and others are 4 ft. That is going to make a huge difference on inside room and comfort.

This floor is a super heavy 16 oz vinyl with welded seams - almost unheard of.

On competitor canvas tents the 90 degree angle connector poles are a common failure point. Kodiak Canvas tents are reinforced with a welded brace and heavy duty tubing.

What are the differences between the 6055 Kodiak Tent and the 6051 Kodiak canvas tent?

These tents are very similar in design and features. The only noticeable difference in construction is the 6055 has air vents at the top, whereas the 6051 does not. The other difference, which is minor, is the carrying bag for the 6055 is a little bit fancier in that it uses a cinch and click mechanism to close up the bag, whereas the 6051 does not.

5 out of 5 stars A Burners Best Friend!
by Ludo from Philly on 11/4/2009
Recommends it to Friends: Yes
I picked this tent up from the warehouse on my way to Burning Man 09. The extra height on the sides was a blessing. I am 6'6, and could stand up in a lot more of the area than my friends Springbar. The sturdy construction brushed off the most vicious dust storm. And after 10 days, the only playa dust in the tent was what we dragged in on our feet and clothes. This sucker is tight! I also love the unique carrying bag design. it wraps and straps around the tent, rather than trying to stuff it into a canvas bag. Much easier! Best money I ever spent!

5 out of 5 stars 6055 Kodiak Canvas Tent - 6 Person 10 X 10
by David from Connecticut on 10/28/2009
Recommends it to Friends: Yes
I purchased this tent in early 2009 after some pretty extensive research on the net. It was to replace a 25 year old Eureka 10X10 tent that has served me well. I wanted to go back in time; and get a real canvas tent. I almost sprung for the Springbar tent, but could not justify the additional cost and ordered the Kodiak with some initial concern. All concern evaporated upon receiving and erecting my Kodiak. It is as advertised. Quality material, quality construction and bullet; proof in harsh weather ... wind and rain. Have not been out in snow. It goes up quickly and take down only takes longer because of having to wipe down the flooring as the tent is folded up. Only criticism I can come up with is the ties on the stake and pole bags could be improved. The tent bag is great! I could not be more pleased. A true camping bargain!

5 out of 5 stars I just spent a week in my new Kodiak Canvas 10 x 10 tent
by LMowrey from Scout Camp on 10/14/2009
Recommends it to Friends: Yes
I just spent a week in my new Kodiak Canvas 10 x 10 tent, and I must write to express my extreme satisfaction with your product. The tense surpassed my expectations in all aspects; I am an avid camper (both as a scout master, and with my family), and even though I had read many glowing reviews, the build quality and overall functionality is beyond anything I ever expected to find in a tent. Needless to say, my fellow campers were envious. This tent, though more expensive than many, is worth every penny, and I recommend it absolutely without reservation.

4 out of 5 stars nice but heavy tent
by lucy from Virginia on 4/7/2011
Recommends it to Friends: Yes
It is a nice but heavy tent. It looks durable, the floor has better material than the roof and wall. It is easy to set up. If the bag had better design and the tent be lighter, that will be 5 star. and also there is some black dirt on the roof of my new tent, which maybe is from the steel poles. Recommend but be careful with the ridiculous return policy. (Updated on 4/7/2011.)

5 out of 5 stars Very good cold weather tent
by James from Huntsville, Alabama on 1/18/2011
Recommends it to Friends: Yes
I received my Kodiak 6055 tent in the mail just in time to test it with the worst weather we have seen in the south for fifty years! The tent is easy to erect, very well built, and stylish. The instructions ask me to lightly wet all the seams and let dry and I had just enough time to do that before the ice storm hit Huntsville. I was happy I paid more money for this quality tent because it protected me and kept me warm and toasty. We were at a powered camp site so we were able to run a cool touch heater and the canvas kept the interior warmer than my topnotch North Face and mountain hardware tents. If you want to stay warm and have fun Winter Camping, you cant go wrong with this tent.

5 out of 5 stars Kodiak Canvas vs. Springbar
by KAL from Idaho on 1/16/2011
Recommends it to Friends: Yes
The "Nitty Gritty" comparison of Kodiak and Springbar. I recently purchased a Kodiak, and have extensively used a Springbar for 15 years. The Kodiak is as good, if not better than the Springbar in every way. The biggest difference for me is that the Kodiak poles are superior. They have metal ends, not plastic. The plastic Springbar ends had broken off my old tent, but the metal rounded nubs on the Kodiak poles are more durable. Secondly, the Kodiak poles are not adjustable, which is actually better because the tent needs to adjustment and there fewer moving parts and slides to deal with. Five Stars!

5 out of 5 stars High Quality Product
by KB from Central Utah on 5/20/2010
Recommends it to Friends: Yes
Excellent product. In the past we have purchased Springbar tents. These tents have the same quality and more features for a better price. We set them up in 40 mph wind and they were rock solid. Having 2 doors instead of one is a major upgrade.
