To start off this section, we should note that a regulation backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches high. Most basketball systems, however, do not have this large of a backboard. There are a large number of mini basketball hoops available, which we will not consider. We will consider basketball hoops made by Lifetime Products, Spalding, Huffy, Goalsetter, and Goalrilla product offerings that have systems that can have the rim reach 10 feet. In this group of available basketball systems, backboards widths can be as small as 44 inches wide and as big as a regulation-sized backboard. Here are some more details for each size group.

Small basketball backboards: 44 inches to 48 inches

Small basketball backboards are typical on basketball hoops priced under $300. These backboard systems will normally be made with plastic, polycarbonate, or acrylic. For these backboard sizes, they are available on inground, portable, and wall-mount basketball systems. The poles on the inground and portable system options will normally be 2.75 inches to 3.5 inches round.

Medium basketball backboards: 50 inches to 54 inches

These mid-sized backboard encompass systems in the both the high end and low end of systems. Basketbal hoops with these backboard sizes are typically priced between $300 to $1199.00. In the cheaper part of that spectrum, the backboards will be made of polycarbonate and acrylic. Those systems with these backboard materials are normally priced below $499.00. Where this backboard size category shifts into the higher-priced systems is when the backboard material is tempered glass. All of the above-mentioned manufacturers will have tempered glass backboard systems in this size category.

Large basketball backboard: 60 inches and 72 inches

These basketball backboards are almost exclusively made with tempered glass, with a few acrylic backboard options. Systems with this size of backboard are also almost exclusively in-ground goals, with only a couple of portable options. Goalsetter, makes a wall-mount backboard system in both a 60-inch and 72-inch backboard size. These basketball systems will also have larger poles (for in-ground and portable options). These poles are typically 5×5 inch and 6×6 inch sizes, with a couple of options with an 8×8 inch size.

Lifetime Products has redesigned the Mammoth basketball hoop line, bringing a completely updated look and feel. The purpose of this post will be to go over the differences between the old models – 98856, 98862, and 98874 – and the new models – 90179, 90180, and 90181. Let’s start with the most noticeable.

Backboard Braketing Updated

On the old line of Mammoth Basketball Hoops, the mounting bracket from the back of the backboard to the mounting arms from the pole met the backboard frame towards the center of the backboard. For some basketball players, this bracket is a distraction, right in the line of site for shooting the ball. The new Mammoth line now has the mounting arms attached to the outside edges of the backboard in what is termed as an arena-view attachment. This design clears up the distraction caused by the mounting arms right behind the shooting square on the old systems. A somehwhat less obvious benefit to this desin is that the arena-view attachment design also helps strengthen the mounting arms to lessen the movement of the backboard when you are playing basketball.

54-inch and 60-inch Mammoth Basketball Hoops Have Longer Mounting Arms

If you are looking for the 54 or 60-inch basketball systems from Mammoth, you will also notice that the mouting arms are now longer, providing great clearance under the backboard for playing a basketball game. Clearance under the backboard is desirable to simulate a real basketball court more closely. On the 54-inch Mammoth basketball goal, the mounting arms are 5 inches longer. For the 60-inch model, the arms are 4 inches longer.

Upgrade Height-Adjustment Mechanism

Lastly, Lifetime Products has also upgraded the strength on the height-adjustment mechanism. While staying with their easy-to-use pneumatic device, which allows for single-handed height adjusting, Lifetime has increased the strength and bulk of this mechanism to provide a longer life of use. This new device is called the Mammoth Pump.

Yesterday, I was walking through the store when I stumbled across a well-known brand name at a discount store. As I looked at the product, a folding table, I immediately recognized the design as being very familiar. The product was a 5 and 6-foot fold-in-half table. The product label was not what I expected because I knew the design was definitely from Lifetime Products, but this label showed a completely different brand entirely. Sure enough, upon closer invenstigation I found the Lifetime logo inprinted on the table. How could this be? The table was clearly of inferior quality of any Lifetime table I had ever dealt with – the table top was thinner, the leg frame was smaller, and the product was truly weaker in every regard. I unfolded the table and set it up in the aisle for further investigation. Everything seemed to be right in the design, just a poor quality.

Do Not Be Fooled By Low-End Quality Lifetime Tables

Just because you see the Lifetime logo on the table, does not necessarily mean that you are getting the quality of table Competitive Edge Products sells. Frequently, when compromising on quality – as in the case of these low-end folding tables I saw at the store – you weaken the table top and frame.
