Purchasing Guide
Below are some questions and answers to help you determine if the Lifetime 1479 Portable Basketball Hoop is the right basketball system for your home.
Who is this basketball hoop best for?
The Lifetime 1479 is an excellent choice for families, teenagers, and recreational players who want a larger backboard, a spring-loaded rim, and dependable stability without moving into Lifetime's premium adjustment systems. Its 48-inch Shatterproof Fusion™ backboard, Slam-It® Rim, and heavy-duty 31-gallon Courtside base make it a well-rounded system for active family basketball.
Why choose a 48-inch basketball hoop?
A 48-inch backboard offers more playing surface than a typical 44-inch hoop while maintaining a compact footprint that fits comfortably in most residential driveways. It provides additional room for bank shots, rebounding drills, and game-like shooting angles, making it a great option for players developing their basketball skills.
What are the benefits of the Shatterproof Fusion™ backboard?
The Shatterproof Fusion™ Backboard combines a durable polycarbonate playing surface with an unbreakable polyethylene frame to provide outstanding weather resistance and long-lasting durability. It delivers a cleaner, more premium appearance than a molded HDPE backboard while maintaining excellent impact resistance for years of outdoor family use.
How does the Quick Adjust® height adjustment work?
The Quick Adjust® system allows the rim height to be changed from 8 to 10 feet in 6-inch increments using a standard broomstick or similar pole. Its simple mechanical design is durable, dependable, and requires very little maintenance, making it an excellent choice for families who only adjust the hoop height occasionally.
What type of play is the Slam-It® Rim designed for?
The Slam-It® Rim features dual compression springs that provide flexibility and spring-back action during active recreational basketball. Compared with a standard fixed rim, it offers a more responsive feel for competitive family games and developing players while helping absorb impact during normal residential play. Players should still avoid hanging on the rim.
How stable is the Lifetime 1479 during play?
The heavy-duty 31-gallon Courtside portable base and 3-inch round steel pole provide dependable stability for residential basketball. When the base is properly filled with water or sand according to the manufacturer's instructions, the system offers a solid playing experience while remaining portable enough to relocate using the integrated transport wheels.
What is the benefit of the padded backboard frame?
The protective frame pad helps shield the edge of the backboard while giving the system a more finished, premium appearance. While it is not intended to replace proper basketball safety practices, it provides an additional layer of protection around the perimeter of the backboard and contributes to the hoop's overall look.
How does the Lifetime 1479 compare with the Lifetime 90168?
Both models feature a 48-inch Shatterproof Fusion™ backboard, Quick Adjust® height adjustment, a Slam-It® Rim, and a 3-inch steel pole. The primary difference is the base and overall presentation. The 1479 includes a larger 31-gallon Courtside portable base and a protective backboard frame pad, providing greater stability and a more premium appearance. The 90168 uses a similar base but includes a pole pad instead of the backboard frame pad. Buyers who prefer added backboard protection and enhanced aesthetics may find the 1479 to be the better fit.
