The backboard pad provides added protection against injuries.

This Lifetime basketball backboard uses a polyethylene plastic material for the backboard. Plastic, while long lasting, does not typically provide as good of a rebound as other materials for the backboard. More importantly, a backboard with a steel frame, instead of plastic, will produce a far better rebound. A good example of this kind of backboard is 73729 Lifetime basketball backboard.
